Icy Conditions

Ice prevailed over the soft, beautiful snow on Wednesday leaving a hard crust that makes outside work pretty treacherous. The chickens have finally realized that they can walk on it. Today they enjoyed the spoils of the fall harvest that we embarasingly didn't use up. They feasted on soft cabbage, turnips and a few beets that were lingering in the fridge and just starting to emit a not so pleasant smell. For them, it was a welcome little bit of plant food that they have been missing with this frozen ground under foot.
For me, farm work has been in short spurts spaced between long intervals of child rearing and home life. But as I sneak away to take my few hours of seed ordering, soil making, or chicken upkeep, I know in the back of my head that these snipits will soon give way to longer stretches of outdoor work. Soon the weather will warm, school will be out and daddy will take over at home. I remember this to both keep my sanity and to remind myself to enjoy every minute!
