Oak is Tracked....

and getting faster each time. The first half is true to the line that lay a couple of feet below the snow,...the middle section,...well,..not so much. Either way there is about two miles of trail tracked for anyone who wants to take advantage of it.

glad to see you got out! did you retrieve your stash?

Josh and I were out yesterday skiing gas lines from Teaberry south. Awesome. Is this Oak near Mont Alto? We saw a gas line there that was steep and deep but were running low on time.

Oak near Stooges,

We saw that gasline from Teaberry too, I think it's the one that drops from near the firetower/Chimney Rocks Rd down to Old Forge Rd.

Brett, I was short on time, but the stash should be fine?? That was hard work just getting to the end of oak.

Stu, That's rattlesnake road, but they actually plowed it up from Old forge including a pullout at the intersection of high rock where the trail starts. Start skiing up High rock and you will see tracks shoot down to the left.

Camps,

Yup, that is the one that Josh and I had plentiful runs on. It was really good even with the snow mobile tracks... I thanked them in one breath (for the boot pack track) and cursed them in the next breath. We have so much snow to play in now, this is sick. If only every year... :) We also made use of the gas line off of Teaberry parking area. Not quite as long but just as steep.

Travis,
We will drop a little further south to find your tracks.

Did you get to that gasline from the top or the bottom?

We shoveled a spot big enough for the car to fit right off of Old Forge Rd. Josh started at Teaberry parking lot the day before and toured over there. It took about two hours to get there from Teaberry. Less than 30 minutes from the car at the bottom. It is tracked out pretty well but still fun as hell. We are heading over toward Mont Alto on the same gas line where we are hoping to find steeper yet!

My trail won't be too thrilling for you. Its fun enough on cross countries, but that's about it,...although you could take a more direct route down that will drop you out at the bottom of rattlesnake,...and it is very steep there. Use my trail to get to the top and your own intuition to get down,...yeah, that would actually be rally good,...and there's another spot too,...damn, too much out there.

Stu,
planning something for tonite,
you say parking at Old Forge and that gasline? and then a long flat trek to the west to climb up to the ridge?

Are Swift Run or Staley open to access your Mont Alto gasline run?

brett said...

that was my next question--swift run and staley plowage.

Todd and I are heading back to the XC trails tonight and will check out some more of lower Snaggy

no gaslineage this day

Parking is sketchy but if you pack a shovel in the car, you should be fine off Old Forge. Hoping to get out on Friday night to scope out the gas line near Mont Alto.

I have big ambitions to finish tracking oak and sg to rocky ridge and then the power line drop off at Mackey. I don't know if it will happen. If I can get big red for a day and park up at the trail head to Oak, I think I can do it. It would make a nice loop. I'll try and make it happen early sat. morning so if anyone wants freshies on that power line, It will be there for you. I'm not going down it.

how early, travis? i'll have the land cruiser.

stu--want company on saturday? i would be snowshoeing/snowboarding.

the gas line off mackey intrigues me.

i'm trying to find company for my neck of the woods to try some ridges and hollows, but if that falls thru, i'll probably head south.

Just confirmed that Josh and I are doing a sunrise Saturday session. Location TBD. He has to work at 8! Fuck that's early.

brett said...

dang--anything slightly later? i'll be at roundtop friday night--dawn patrol the next morning is going to be difficult but still might be doable.

studawg said...

I want to find Travis and shove him down the power line off Mackey!

brett said...

yeah, it's not THAT steep.

Tractor said...

I'm game for dawn patrol and will try and snap worthy pics with a shitty camera. I bet we can pretty much drive to the power line because where else would the plow turn around? Dawn on at that spot is awesome,..I'm in! Specific time?....One final thing is the snow has compressed like mad! What will be left up there? Lets get it and at least try!Bow chica bow-wow.

brett said...

compression, meltage, and crustage are what i'm worried about after yesterday and today. wind at temps above freezing doesn't help, either--accelerates loss...let me work on dawn patrol...

studawg said...

Dawn patrols are on a time restraint. We have to be done by 7:15ish. We are going to head over toward Mont Alto where we found some steeps. No time for more touring unfortunately. If ya'll are game let me know.

brett said...

where and what time to meet?

Tractor said...

I will still track up to the power line and tour down RR to southern gas and oak. I will be either at the water treatment or as far up as I can on rattlesnake by 6 if anyone wants to join. Sunrise is 6:55.

Todd said...

Travis & Brett, any chance I can join you guys? I could be on tele's with skins or snowboard/shoe combo. I want to get some more of this before it's gone and no one down here can play.

Tractor said...

Todd, I'm starting to rethink, That exposure could be too much after today. Looking around my house there really isn't too much left and that side gets some sun. I think I might hit a road bike instead. Check with brett. He probably would want a later start than I could do and knows exactly where to go. You do to. Just drive straight up the road we parked on for the ride until you get to the Power line. Go left on your skis and you will recognize the spot. I think today was too much for that power line.

Tractor said...

Went back to school to get my road bike. West banks were melted but east facing banks were fine. I think I will ski. As long as I am on the skis by 8 and get 3 to four hours in motion, I'm game for anything. I remember the last storm over christmas left oak skiable after everything else had melted. Let me know. I will be parked as far up rattlesnake as I can get.

Todd said...

I'm game for an 8am excursion. Just tell me where I need to be at that time. I'll shoot you guys an email. May be easier and I can check them on my phone.

Tractor said...

I'm going as high up on rattlesnake road as I can get in a car. I'm hoping to the Power line. The bottom, close to where we parked this summer is plowed most of the way up. Just have to look round. You have to enter by the bottom of rs road so we can't miss each other. I'll be the guy that's stuck in a diesel golf. Email is much better. Cell is 717 360 2899.

Todd said...

so rattlesnake is accessible from Mentzer Gap to the south? Or, do I have to hit rattlesnake from the north and Old Forge? my cell is 301-252-8186

Josh and I were out at 5:30. We parked at the intersection of Gum Springs and Iron Springs and hit the Gas Line there. It was steep at the top and full of saplings. The snow was crusty but skiable. Beautiful sunrise. What a gift it was. I am very grateful to be able to have moments like this.
